β¦ The Journey at a Glance
Mombasa Airport to Watamu
The drive from Mombasaβs Moi International Airport to Watamu is about 120 km and takes roughly two and a half hours. A private taxi costs somewhere between KSh 4,000 and 9,000 depending on where you book it, a matatu costs under KSh 600 with one change at Malindi, and there is no ferry involved at any point. That last part surprises people, so it is worth saying clearly up front.
First, the ferry question
Search this journey and you will find people asking about the Likoni ferry. You do not need it. The Likoni ferry connects Mombasa island to the south coast, which is Diani, Tiwi and Ukunda. Watamu is north. Going north you cross the Makupa causeway onto the island, then the Nyali Bridge to the north mainland, and follow the coast road from there. Both are bridges, both are open around the clock, and neither involves queuing for a boat.
The route in one line
Airport at Port Reitz, over the causeway onto Mombasa island, across Nyali Bridge, then north on the B8 through Mtwapa, Kilifi and Gede, and right into Watamu. It is tarmac the whole way and your driver will know it without a map.

Your four options, compared
| Cost | Time | Worth it when | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transfer booked by your host | KSh 6,000 to 9,000 | 2.5 hrs | Night arrivals, families, first visit |
| Taxi negotiated at the airport | KSh 4,000 to 7,000 | 2.5 hrs | You are comfortable haggling |
| Matatu via Malindi | Under KSh 600 | About 3 hrs | Daylight, light luggage, tight budget |
| Domestic hop to Malindi | Fare plus KSh 2,000 to 3,000 | 30 min flight plus 30 min | Connecting anyway, hate long drives |
Option 1: a transfer arranged before you land
The least stressful and the one we suggest for a first visit. Your hotel, villa or host arranges a driver who waits in arrivals with your name on a board. You pay a fixed price agreed in advance, usually KSh 6,000 to 9,000 for the car rather than per person, and there is no negotiation after a long flight. For a family with luggage, splitting one car this way often works out cheaper than four matatu seats plus the hassle.
Option 2: a taxi from the airport rank
There are always drivers outside arrivals. Expect an opening quote well above the going rate, particularly if you arrive looking tired and new. The realistic range is KSh 4,000 to 7,000 for the whole car. Agree the total, in shillings, before your bags go in the boot, and confirm it covers the whole way to your accommodation in Watamu rather than dropping you at the junction.
Agree the fare before the bags go in
The single most common mistake on this route is settling the price after loading. Ask the total, in Kenyan shillings, for the car, to your exact address. Say the number back. If it is more than about KSh 9,000 you are being quoted a tourist rate, and there will be another driver two metres away.
Option 3: the matatu route
The local way and genuinely fine in daylight. From the airport take a taxi or boda boda to Mombasa town, then a matatu from the Kobil stage to Malindi for around KSh 250 to 350. That leg takes about two hours. At Malindi, change to a matatu or tuk-tuk for Watamu, another KSh 100 to 200 and about thirty minutes. Total under KSh 600 and about three hours door to door.
It is hot, it is crowded, luggage space is limited and it will be the most interesting part of your trip. Do it in daylight, keep your bag on your lap, and it is completely straightforward.
Option 4: fly the last leg
If you would rather not drive at all, there are short hops from Mombasa to Malindi, and Kenya Airways and Jambojet both serve Malindi from Nairobi. Honestly, if you have not booked yet, the better move is to skip Mombasa entirely and fly into Malindi in the first place. It is 30 minutes from Watamu instead of two and a half hours.

How long it really takes
The drive itself is easy. What varies is Mombasa. Crossing the island between about 7am and 9am, or 4pm and 7pm, can add an hour on its own. The Nyali Bridge approach and the strip through Mtwapa are the two places you will sit still. Once you are past Mtwapa the road opens up and the rest is quick.
Klickenya local tip
A midday landing is the sweet spot. You clear the island before the evening build up and arrive in Watamu in daylight, which makes finding an unfamiliar villa or hotel far easier. If your flight lands after dark, book the transfer in advance rather than sorting it at the rank.
Arriving at night
Plenty of international flights land in the evening and the drive is perfectly normal after dark. The road is tarmac all the way and there is traffic on it at every hour. Two sensible precautions: have the transfer booked in advance so someone is expecting you, and have your accommodationβs exact location and a phone number saved offline. Watamu addresses are vague and many properties are down unlit sand tracks that are hard to find at midnight.
- Book the transfer before you fly, not on arrival.
- Save your hostβs phone number and a pinned map location offline.
- Carry small notes. Nobody has change for a 1,000 at 11pm.
- Tell your host your flight number so they can track a delay.
Paying for it
Cash or M-Pesa. No driver on this route takes a card. There are ATMs in the arrivals hall at Mombasa and in Mtwapa and Kilifi if you need to stop, and if you have not set up mobile money yet, our guide to money in Kenya explains how visitors register with a passport in about twenty minutes. Doing it at the airport before you set off makes the whole trip easier.
| Cost | Notes | |
|---|---|---|
| Prebooked private transfer | KSh 6,000 to 9,000 | Per car, fixed, name board at arrivals |
| Airport rank taxi | KSh 4,000 to 7,000 | Per car, negotiate before loading |
| Matatu, Mombasa to Malindi | KSh 250 to 350 | About 2 hrs, from Kobil stage |
| Matatu or tuk-tuk, Malindi to Watamu | KSh 100 to 200 | About 30 min |
| Taxi, Malindi Airport to Watamu | KSh 2,000 to 3,000 | If you fly the last leg |
| Water and a snack for the road | KSh 200 | Worth it, it is a hot drive |
Anything above about KSh 9,000 for the car is a tourist rate, not a fare. Say the number you expect, calmly, and wait.

Mombasa airport to Watamu: frequently asked questions
How far is Watamu from Mombasa airport?
About 120 km, which is roughly two and a half hours by road in normal traffic. The route runs north from Moi International Airport at Port Reitz, across Mombasa island and the Nyali Bridge, then up the coast road through Mtwapa, Kilifi and Gede.
Do I need to take the Likoni ferry to get to Watamu?
No. The Likoni ferry serves the south coast only, meaning Diani, Tiwi and Ukunda. Watamu is north of Mombasa, so the route uses the Makupa causeway and the Nyali Bridge instead. There is no ferry crossing anywhere on this journey.
How much is a taxi from Mombasa airport to Watamu?
Between KSh 4,000 and 9,000 for the whole car, not per person. A transfer prebooked through your accommodation typically sits at the upper end, around KSh 6,000 to 9,000, and a taxi negotiated at the airport rank is usually KSh 4,000 to 7,000. Agree the total before your luggage is loaded.
Is there a bus or matatu from Mombasa to Watamu?
Yes, with one change. Take a matatu from Mombasaβs Kobil stage to Malindi, around KSh 250 to 350 and about two hours, then change at Malindi to a matatu or tuk-tuk for Watamu, another KSh 100 to 200 and about thirty minutes. Total is under KSh 600 and roughly three hours.
Can I get from the SGR terminus to Watamu?
Yes, and it is a slightly better starting point than the airport. Mombasa Terminus is at Miritini on the mainland, so you avoid some of the island traffic. It is about two and a half hours north from there by road. Book train tickets only through the official Kenya Railways portal, as several unofficial lookalike sites rank well for SGR searches.
Is it safe to drive from Mombasa to Watamu at night?
Yes, the road is tarmac the whole way and busy at all hours. The sensible precautions are to book your transfer in advance rather than arranging it on arrival, and to have your accommodation pinned offline with a phone number saved. Many Watamu properties are down unlit sand tracks that are genuinely hard to find after dark.
Should I fly to Mombasa or Malindi for Watamu?
Malindi, if you have the choice. It is 25 km from Watamu, about thirty minutes by road, and the taxi costs KSh 2,000 to 3,000. Mombasa is 120 km away and adds two and a half hours of driving to your journey. Only fly into Mombasa if that is where your international flight lands or the fare difference is large.
The bottom line
It is a straightforward two and a half hour drive on a good road with no ferry and no complications. Prebook the car if it is your first visit or you are landing at night, negotiate at the rank if you are comfortable doing that, and take the matatu if you are counting shillings and travelling in daylight. Whichever you choose, carry cash and agree the price before you set off.
